Is machine translation acceptable for official documents?
Short answer
Not on its own. Official submissions require a certification signed by a person who takes responsibility for accuracy. Where machine output is used at all in a professional workflow, it is followed by full human revision — the process described in ISO 18587 for post-editing.
For legal, medical and safety-critical text the risk profile makes machine-first workflows a poor trade, because the errors machine output produces are fluent and therefore easy to miss.
Quality management for translation services is described in ISO 17100, which sets out translator competence and the requirement for revision by a second linguist.
