Does my foreign legal document need an Apostille or embassy legalisation?
Short answer
It depends on the country the document comes from. The HCCH 1961 Apostille Convention entered into force for Thailand on 22 December 2024, so documents from another Contracting Party can be certified with an Apostille; documents from a non-Contracting State still follow the older legalisation chain.
An Apostille certifies the signature, the capacity of the signatory and the seal — not the content of the document and not the accuracy of any translation attached to it.
The receiving Thai office may still require a Thai translation and may have its own view on who may certify that translation. Confirm both points before starting the chain, because reordering the steps afterwards means starting again.
