Registering a marriage in Thailand with a foreign national
In short
Marriage in Thailand is registered at a district office (amphoe) under Book V of the Civil and Commercial Code. A foreign national normally first obtains an affirmation of freedom to marry from their embassy in Thailand, which is then translated into Thai and legalised before the registration appointment.
The sequence is embassy affirmation, certified Thai translation, legalisation by the Department of Consular Affairs, then the district office appointment. Each embassy sets its own procedure for the affirmation — some require an appointment, a statutory declaration or supporting evidence of divorce or bereavement.
At the appointment the registrar reads the declarations, the parties sign, and where one party does not speak Thai an interpreter attends and signs as interpreter. The marriage certificate issued is in Thai; a certified translation is normally needed to register the marriage abroad or to support a spouse visa.
What we need from you
- Passports of both parties
- Embassy affirmation of freedom to marry, translated and legalised
- Evidence of the end of any previous marriage
- Two witnesses and, where needed, an interpreter
Watch out
Name spelling must match the passport throughout the chain. One inconsistent transliteration invalidates the whole set.
