Can I keep driving on an International Driving Permit?
Short answer
An International Driving Permit is designed for temporary visitors and has its own validity period. Residents are expected to obtain a Thai licence from the Department of Land Transport, and insurers may take the licence position into account on a claim.
Conversion from a recognised foreign licence is usually simpler than the full test route, but the office decides what it accepts and may still require the written test or a medical certificate.
Check the licence categories: motorcycle and car licences are separate, and riding on a car licence is a common and expensive mistake.
