Health cover and social security for foreign residents

In short

Foreign employees of Thai employers are generally registered with the Social Security Office under the Social Security Act B.E. 2533 (1990), which provides defined benefits at designated hospitals. Some long-stay visa categories additionally require private health insurance meeting conditions set by the authorities.

Social security cover and private insurance solve different problems. Social security ties treatment to the registered hospital; private policies offer choice of provider but have their own exclusions, waiting periods and pre-existing condition rules.

Where a visa category imposes an insurance condition, the policy must meet the coverage requirements set for that category, and evidence is checked at application and at extension. Confirm the current requirement with the responsible authority before purchasing.

Watch out

A policy that satisfies an insurer's marketing description may still fail a visa category's specified coverage conditions — check the wording.
