How far in advance should I book an interpreter?

Short answer

For common pairs and general business meetings, a few working days is usually workable. For court and medical assignments, or for less common language pairs, book as soon as the slot is confirmed — briefing time, not availability, is often the binding constraint.

Briefing material should reach the interpreter at least 48 hours before legal or medical work. That window is what lets the interpreter build a term list, learn the chronology and check unfamiliar vocabulary against a reliable source.

Simultaneous events need the longest lead time because they involve a two-interpreter team and equipment. Treat the interpreting line as part of venue planning rather than a last-minute add-on.
