Does the Thai court provide an interpreter, or do I bring my own?
Short answer
It depends on the court and the matter. Proceedings are conducted in Thai and the court will ensure a witness who does not understand Thai can be heard, but availability of a court-arranged interpreter for a given language is not guaranteed, so parties frequently arrange their own subject to the court's acceptance.
Where the party arranges the interpreter, the court still controls admission. The interpreter may be asked to state their qualifications, to take an oath or affirmation, and to be identified on the record before testimony begins.
Ask your Thai lawyer to raise the interpreter question at the earliest hearing rather than on the day of examination. Confirming the arrangement in advance avoids an adjournment.
