Technical interpreting for audits and factory visits
In short
Factory audits, engineering acceptance tests and ISO surveillance visits move quickly between the meeting room and the shop floor. The assignment works best with a glossary agreed in advance and built from the client's own drawings, standard operating procedures and part lists.
Terminology consistency matters more than elegance here. If a component is called one thing in the drawing and another on the line, the interpreter should be told which term the audit report will use, so the finding, the corrective action and the follow-up visit all describe the same object.
Shop-floor conditions are physically demanding: noise, safety equipment, walking interviews and stops at individual stations. Plan for a portable audio system where the group is larger than four people, and build short breaks into the walk-through.

- Site address, audit standard or checklist, and the visit schedule
- Drawings, SOPs, part lists or a prior audit report for glossary building
- Safety induction requirements and PPE the interpreter must bring
- Whether a written summary of findings will be produced on site
Watch out
Do not let the interpreter be pulled into the role of technical advisor. The interpreter renders; the auditor decides.
