In Thailand notarial acts are performed by a Notarial Services Attorney licensed by the Lawyers Council of Thailand. The notary certifies signature, identity or copy conformity - never the truth of the contents.

A notarised document intended for use abroad usually still needs an Apostille or legalisation afterwards. The notarial seal alone rarely satisfies a foreign authority.

How legal and judicial document translation works

Since 22 December 2024 Thailand is a party to the Apostille Convention, so for member states a single Apostille from the Department of Consular Affairs replaces the old embassy leg. For non-member states the full legalisation chain still applies.

Legal translation is judged on traceability, not style. A court judgment, an arbitral award or a power of attorney has to be translated so that every case number, party name, date and operative clause maps one-to-one onto the source, because the receiving authority reads both side by side.

Thai courts and agencies issue certified copies with their own seal. Translations are attached to that certified copy, never to a plain photocopy, and the translator's certification page is what the Department of Consular Affairs stamps.

Pre-submission checklist

• Keep the certification order: issuer, translator, consular authority, embassy
• Check validity dates on every supporting document on the day of submission
• Carry identity documents for every named party and for the representative
• Keep receipts and reference numbers for each stage
• Scan the complete file exactly as submitted
• Allow for public holidays at each office in the plan
• Confirm in writing what the receiving authority accepts today

• Letting a passport change break the match with an issued document
